Why is the US political system so polarized between Liberals & Conservatives to where there's so few Moderates?

It always seems to me that most politicians (and political thinkers) are either ingrained in one set of thought or another.

That's really just a story.

What's happened is that the public dialogue has moved so far right in the U.S. that what used to be moderate is now called liberal, and what used to be accepted as liberal (and normal) is now ostracized as being off the map.

Does that make sense? Maybe if I try to draw it out???

pre 90s: reactionary, far right/ right/ right center/ moderate/ left center/ left/ far left, radical
post 90s: ----right---------------/ moderate-----------/ 'liberal'---/

(Today's 'moderate' is yesterday's right and right center, yesterday's 'moderate' is today's 'liberal' and the entire proper left wing has been excluded from the discussion and positions of much power. It's awful.
